It is fascinating to see the recent progress in genetics and genomics. The genome sequences of humans and all major animal models have been completed, and most genes have been annotated as well. These achievements pave the way to decipher genome function and architecture, including the determination of all coding genes and regulatory elements. Based on this knowledge, mutations for every gene will be systematically introduced into the genome to determine function in the entire organism. The mouse provides an ideal model organism for systematic, high throughput mutagenesis, particularly because pluripotent embryonic stem cell (ES) technologies are available.
